Wanderings through Singapore

Revisiting our old home, Singapore

Before we moved back to New Zealand permanently, we lived in Singapore for 12 years. It is still very much 'home' for us both and we try to plan a visit to see old friends whenever our travels take us in that direction.

Our winter travels this year are taking us to the UK for a family wedding. So we planned for 3 days in Singapore, staying with old friends and slotting back into life in the tropics for a few moments. First duties after leaving winter behind were a spa and a dip in our friends swimming pool first thing in the morning! Hello 35 degrees…

Gary is still on the mend from his knee replacement surgery, so he stayed back to rest his knee and I headed to the main centre Orchard Road on the public bus. It was sure hot and humid but lovely and sunny. After a browse around the main street I jumped back onto the MRT underground train and headed to the Botanical Gardens. This was one of my favourite places while we lived in Singapore, and a perfect escape from the crowded main streets.  The new ‘scan and go’ push bikes everywhere in the city were tempting to try out, but I stuck with getting around on foot (just to be on the safe side you know) but couldn’t resist a shot of our Point Bush Wines on board!

Dripping with the humidity and heat, I headed back to our friend’s apartment for a cool down evening swim. Into the evening we caught up with half a dozen friends at our favourite seafood restaurant out on the East Coast of the island, sat in the breeze and watched the action. Singapore really is a social city, everyone heads out at night for family dinners and spending time in the cooler part of the day after the sun goes down. So of course there was a steady procession of walkers, bikers, kids on brlliantly illuminated bikes....it was so busy at dusk to dark. As per usual Gary ate his body weight in “Black Pepper Crab” his long time favourite local delicacy that I’m sure he has dreams about back in New Zealand.

Full and very happy we are now preparing to pack bags again and board our flight to Heathrow, London and onto the UK part of our travels. The Wandering Winos will continue blogging once we hit the ground on the other side of the world. Bye for now, Ann

Ann is one half of Point Bush Wines, alongside husband Gary. A lover of tropical temperatures, a permanent British expat since the age of 18, and happiest when discovering local history and culture wherever she goes.
